Employers in Massachusetts and across the country are obligated to protect their employees by providing a safe work environment. Stringent laws and regulations exist today to protect workers from hazards in the workplace. In today’s economy, many businesses are looking to cut costs, and by doing so, they often jeopardize the safety of their workforce. Recently, a worker in another state filed a wrongful termination lawsuit after he was allegedly fired for pointing out several safety violations.
The plaintiff was hired as the safety manager of a roofing company. According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff alerted several of the company’s higher-ups to multiple safety violations soon after he was hired. As a result of the violations, the company paid out over $160,000 in fines.
The plaintiff alleges that, shortly before his firing, he was called to a job site by company management during a safety inspection. The plaintiff stated that he allowed workers at the job site to be interviewed by safety inspectors. The plaintiff claims that company management was not happy the workers were allowed to be interviewed by safety inspectors, and two weeks later, the plaintiff was fired. The plaintiff seeks monetary damages and reassurance from the company it will never terminate an employee for the same reason again.
Loss of employment can be a very difficult experience for anyone to face, especially when an employee is terminated for trying to do the right thing. Fortunately, laws are in place to protect workers in Massachusetts and across the United States.
