Discrimination comes in many forms and can affect anyone. Everyone knows that discrimination in any form is wrong and can have negative and lasting effects. In the workplace, discrimination is a problem that employers cannot afford to ignore. Not only is workplace discrimination wrong, it is also illegal in the state of Massachusetts and all across the United States. A recent lawsuit filed in another state resulted in a $30,000 settlement and is a perfect example of just how costly it can be for employers to allow discrimination in the workplace.
The lawsuit, filed by an African-American employee of a bread-making company, alleged that the employer failed to adequately respond to the employee’s complaints of blatant racial discrimination. The employee claimed that he endured frequent offensive racial comments by his co-workers. The man asserted there was minimal response by his employer after the racial comments were brought to the employer’s attention.
The lawsuit claimed that the conduct of the employer violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits racial discrimination in the workplace. According to the lawsuit, the employer failed to take action to remedy the alleged racial discrimination. The lawsuit resulted in the employer agreeing to pay the victim a settlement of $30,000.
Surprisingly, workplace discrimination is still very prevalent these days. This lawsuit demonstrates how a victim of discrimination can be compensated for being treated unfairly. Massachusetts residents who have been subjected to discrimination in the workplace would likely benefit from seeking the services of an experienced employment law attorney.
